Being a Good Citizen
When children come to care about the world around them, they will develop compassion for others, generosity, and good citizenship.
One way to foster this sense of care is to volunteer with a local organization or perform service projects in your neighborhood. Participating in such activities provides opportunities for children to develop a good work ethic.
Some ideas for neighborhood service projects could include:
- Raking leaves or doing other yardwork for a neighbor
- Shoveling snow for a neighbor
- Participating in tree-planting days at local parks
- Participating in neighborhood clean-up projects
- Collecting clothing for a homeless shelter
You could also call some of the local nonprofit organizations in your city to find opportunities to volunteer. Your family could volunteer to serve dinner at a homeless shelter, participate in Sub-for-Santa programs during the holidays, or visit retirement homes or hospitals.
