A Family Education Plan is the ‘learning at home' connecting piece that is so essential to making the Student Education Plan and the Student Education Occupation Plan complete and achievable.
A Family Education Plan or FEP is a framework designed to support parents in their roles as their child's first teacher and educational advocate. It begins even before the birth of a child and continues throughout a lifetime. The plan centers on helping each child realize their full potential and upon inspiring and supporting the whole family to achieve successful lifelong learning. As parents and children become involved in creating and carrying out their own plans, they learn how to organize a learning environment in their home. Daily family routines are established and out-of-school activities are monitored. The family has fun learning together. Family activities support what is being taught in the classroom. Children do their home work and even pass it in! Parents encourage their children to work hard in school. They regularly discuss education, careers, life skills and interests. Parents communicate regularly with their child's teacher. Families are in touch with what is happening at their school. Parents send their children to school ready to learn every day. They expect only the best from their child and for their child. They understand what family-school partnerships are all about and they feel confident in working with teachers and the school staff. They are ready to be an educational advocate for their child.
An Individual Education Plan or IEP is for children who have been identified with special needs and have been placed in a Special Education Program. This plan is put together with input from a team including the teacher, the parents, the principal, and others who are giving the child special care and/or services. The goal is to come up with a plan that identifies strategies that will help the child reach his or her full potential during the school year. The Federal Government requires this plan for any child in Special Education and parents are very important to this process.
A Student Education Plan or SEP is Utah's format for Parent-Teacher Conferences at the elementary school level. This is a time when the parent and their child sit down with the teacher to discuss what the student's strengths and interests are and what would be the best approach to take to make sure they learn about and master the things they need to that year. It is important that the child's parent has thought about what their child is good at and what goals they would like see their child meet during the school year. During the SEP the teacher, student and parent talk about what they can each do to support the student's learning.
A Student Education/Occupation Plan or SEOP is Utah's format and process for Junior High/Middle School and High School students. The plan will help them identify their strengths and to help them plan and manage their education so they can be ready for what they would like to do after high school. The Parent plays a critical role in creating and monitoring their child's SEOP. Guidance counselors at the school level will help students develop their own individualized SEOP. They will oversee and guide each student through this process. The SEOP program will be discussed with parents yearly and on a regular basis during scheduled SEOP Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences. Parents and students may request other meetings as needed. |
